Lounge Chairs

Forty-one mid-century lounge chairs, from £100. The range runs from the plywood chair you move between rooms to the leather-and-veneer chair you build a room around, and every model is built to the specification we publish on its product page.

Start here: how much floor can you give up?

This is the question that decides everything else, because these designs differ far more in clearance than in footprint.

  • Eames-style lounge chair and ottoman — the largest, at W82 × D82 × H84cm plus a W63 × D53 × H42cm ottoman. It reclines, so allow roughly 110cm of clearance from the back of the chair to anything behind it. Best angled into a corner toward a window or fireplace, never pushed flat against a wall.
  • The same chair without the ottoman — for a study or office corner where it will mostly be looked at and occasionally sat in.
  • Barcelona-style chairs — lower and upright at W79 × D79 × H85cm on mirror-polished steel. It does not recline, so 20cm behind is enough. The open frame makes it work far better in small rooms and hallways than its footprint suggests.
  • LC4 chaise longue — L160 × W58.4 × H61cm. A dedicated run of wall or floor, treated as a single statement piece rather than part of a seating group.
  • Occasional chairs — LCW plywood at £199 and RAR rockers from £150. The small, movable end of the range, for corners and landings a full lounge chair would swamp.

Leather, plywood and frame finishes

Eames-style chairs pair a 7-layer laminated hardwood veneer shell with Italian aniline leather. Aniline is dyed through rather than pigment-coated, so it develops a patina and shows character with use — choose it if you want the chair to age. Walnut and rosewood shells read warm; ashwood and ebonised finishes read cooler and more graphic.

Barcelona-style chairs use hand-tufted Italian leather panels over polished steel, and the steel is the dominant visual element, so match it to other metals in the room. The LCW plywood chairs have no upholstery at all — the wood is the entire design.
