Rocking

RAR-style rocking armchairs from £100 — a moulded polypropylene shell with integrated arms on solid wood rocking runners. One of the few mid-century designs that is as practical as it is recognisable.

Specification

W62 × D60 × H70cm with a 42cm seat height. The 70cm overall height is low for an armchair, which is part of why it does not dominate a room despite the rocking base.

Clearance for the rock

The footprint understates the space needed. Allow at least 30cm of clear floor behind the chair for the rocking motion — more if you rock energetically. Do not place it directly against a wall or skirting board, and keep it clear of radiators and floor-length curtains.

On carpet the runners will move more slowly and sink slightly; on hard floors they glide. Felt pads on the runners are worth adding if you have a wooden floor you care about.

Nursery use

The low 42cm seat and enclosed arms make this a genuine nursery chair rather than a decorative one — easy to get in and out of while holding a baby, and the shell wipes clean. The polypropylene shell has no fabric or cushion to spot-clean.

Elsewhere in the house

It also works as a living-room accent chair or in a bedroom corner. Because the shell is a single moulded piece, colour is the entire design — pick it to work with the room rather than to blend in.
