Accessories

Occasional tables and accessories that finish a mid-century seating arrangement, from £149. Small pieces, but the ones that decide whether a lounge chair is somewhere you actually want to sit.

The side table question

A lounge chair without a surface beside it rarely gets used. Somewhere to put a cup, a book or a phone is what turns a display piece into a reading chair, and it is the most common thing missing from an otherwise well-furnished corner.

Getting the height right

The Eileen Gray-inspired side table has a 50cm tempered glass top and adjusts up to 70cm high, which is the reason it suits so many positions. As a rule, set a side table within about 5cm of the arm height of the chair beside it — higher and it looks disconnected, lower and you have to reach down awkwardly.

For an Eames-style lounge chair the arm sits around 55–60cm from the floor. For a Barcelona-style chair there is no arm, so work from the 40cm seat height instead and set the table slightly above it.

The adjustable column also lets the table cantilever over a bed or a sofa arm, which is where the original design came from.

Materials

A 5mm tempered glass round top on a chrome-plated stainless steel frame. Glass keeps the table visually invisible, which matters when it sits next to a chair you actually want people to look at. Chrome is bright — check it against the other metals in the room.
