Eames Style ES104 Leather Lobby Chair, High Back – Black
Built to be sat in, and to be seen
A lobby chair has to work twice over: composed enough to read well from across a reception floor, and comfortable enough for someone who has been waiting twenty minutes. The ES104 pairs a high back with a wide, low seat, so it sits closer to a lounge chair than to a task chair.
It comes from the same mid-century school of aluminium seating that first appeared in 1958 — structure made visible rather than upholstered over. That honesty is why the shape has outlasted almost everything designed alongside it.
The aluminium-framed lobby chair follows the design language introduced by Charles and Ray Eames in 1958, and derives from their 1960 lobby seating work. This is an inspired interpretation, not the licensed original.
Aluminium, chrome-plated and hand-buffed
The side rails are cast aluminium, chromed and then hand-buffed until the finish reflects properly. Machine polishing gets you shiny; hand-buffing gets you depth, and on a chair this size the eye notices. The five-star base and its five castors are finished to match.
The chair stays genuinely light — aluminium does the structural work without the mass of a steel frame. You can move it across a room without planning the manoeuvre.
Ribbed, suspended, hand-stitched
Seat and back are a single suspended panel rather than separate cushions, upholstered in black Italian leather and hand-stitched into the horizontal ribbing the design is known for. Because the panel is suspended between the rails, it flexes slightly with you instead of resisting you — a quieter kind of comfort than a chair full of levers.
Padding is high-resilience urethane foam, chosen for recovery. It should look the same after a year of daily use as it does on delivery.
Adjustment
- Gas-lift seat height, 41.5–47.5 cm
- Tilt with locking upright position
- 360° swivel
- Five twin-wheel castors
Where it earns its keep
Reception areas, client waiting rooms, boardroom perimeters and executive offices. Pairs naturally with walnut, oak and glass, and reads well against both white walls and darker schemes.
If you need a chair to work at a desk all day rather than to receive visitors, the EA217 Soft Pad desk chair is the closer fit. Alternative upholstery colours can be arranged — contact us if you are matching an existing scheme.
