Chaise

Chaise longues in the mid-century style, from £649. Leather on a tubular chrome-plated steel frame with a black base — the silhouette drawn in 1928 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, and still one of the most recognisable shapes in furniture.

The range

Both are the same design, the same frame and the same price. The only difference is the leather.

Dimensions and planning

L160 x W58.4 x H61 cm. The length is the constraint: at 160 cm this needs a dedicated run of floor, and it does not sit comfortably as part of a seating group around a coffee table. Treat it as a single statement piece with clear space around it.

The best positions are along a wall in a bedroom, in a wide bay window, or at an angle in a corner of a living room. Allow at least 60 cm of walkway on the access side. Because the frame is open and raised, it reads lighter in a room than its length suggests.

How it is used

The seat frame is a continuous curve of chrome tubing that rests on — rather than fixes to — the base, which is what allows the angle to be changed.

The cradle glides smoothly along the base to your preferred angle and holds by friction and balance - there is no lever, latch or lock mechanism. The range runs from an upright reading position to a near-flat recline, and the bolster headrest slides along the frame so you can set it wherever your neck falls.

It is built for reading and resting rather than for conversation or television. The reclined angle puts your head back, which is comfortable for one but awkward in a group.

Leather and frame

Leather upholstery with a matching bolster headrest that slides along the frame. The chrome tubing is bright and reflective and is the dominant visual element — worth checking against the other metals in the room. Black is the most graphic and hides marks best; brown is warmer and works with wood floors and mid-century timber.
